Understanding Nervous System Regulation and Its Impact on Your Health

Hello everyone! As we enter spring, the season of new beginnings and fresh energy, it is a good time to reflect on our personal lives and how we can create positive change. One aspect we can focus on is our nervous system.

Our nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating our mood, emotions, and overall sense of well-being. When our nervous system is dysregulated, it can manifest in a variety of ways, including constant feelings of being overwhelmed or on edge, chronic pain and illness, sleep and digestive problems, as well as poor attention, poor memory, addiction, and exhaustion.

So, what exactly is nervous system regulation? At its core, it's the ability to move flexibly between different states of arousal in response to stressors. Essentially, it's the ability to adapt to changes in our environment and not become overwhelmed by them.

On the other hand, when our nervous system is dysregulated, our thinking, behavior, heart rate, and breathing can become erratic. We may feel panic or depression, or anxiety out of nowhere, or our emotions can suddenly explode and flood us with adrenaline (the fight/flight response).

If any of these signs resonate with you, it's essential to consider how not taking action to regulate your nervous system will affect you in the long run.

There are many ways to support our nervous system, including meditation, deep breathing, exercise, and mindfulness practices. By incorporating these techniques into our daily routine, we can improve our overall health and well-being and make the most of this new season. However, implementing new habits can be challenging, and sometimes, we need a little extra support.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will share my favorite strategies I have implemented into my life as I am on my own journey of recovery from symptoms of severe burnout and a dysregulated nervous system. I understand firsthand what these feelings are like, and feeling like I need to do something and not knowing where to start can be overwhelming.
